Future of regional policy and audit discussed during visit to Prague

Commissioner Johannes Hahn visited Prague on 22 and 23 March to attend a conference on the future of regional policy with the so-called Visegrad countries (Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary) and Slovenia.

During the meeting the support for a continuation of regional investment funding was given by all parties involved, indicating the need to focus future investments on themes like energy-efficiency, innovation, funding small companies and research and development infrastructure. In a separate meeting with Czech Prime Minister Mr. Petr Necas Commissioner Hahn raised the issue of improved audit and control of EU funded programmes.

An Action Plan has been agreed with the Czech authorities to improve the financial control, verification of projects and selection of staff to managing authorities in order to ensure a proper handling of EU funds.
