Commissioner Hahn's visit in Cyprus: full report

On Friday 24 February Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn visited Cyprus, where he met with President Demetris Christofias and Cyprus Interior Minister Neoklis Syllikiotis.

The main purpose of his second visit to Cyprus where he had already been in July 2011 was to discuss the priorities for the Cypriot Presidency of the European Union in July-December 2012. The timing of this Presidency is crucial, because during this time the negotiations over legislation for the next programming period of cohesion policy will be completed.

He also met the members of the Union of Cyprus Municipalities and participated in a conference on the future of cohesion policy which was organised by Mr George Georghiou, Secretary General to the Council of Ministers and Permanent Secretary of the Planning Bureau, the Cypriot managing authority.

In his speech, which concluded the conference, he stressed that cohesion policy is indeed a tool for crisis response and stimulation of growth and that the proposals for the new programming period will ensure  even greater efficiency of the resources invested. See his speech "Regional policy as the tool to deliver growth via investment in energy-efficiency and innovation".
