On 24th October, Commissioner Johannes Hahn gave a keynote speech at the opening of the 'Effective Instruments Supporting Territorial Development' conference, co-organised by the Polish Ministry of Regional Development and the European Commission, and marking one of the major events of the Polish presidency. Commissioner Hahn presented the present proposals for cohesion policy instruments supporting territorial development (urban and rural areas, and regions). He also used this opportunity to unveil the Commission's "Cities of tomorrow" report, which will feed into the debate on the urban dimension of cohesion policy post-2013, and offers 10 good practice case studies of cities tackling common challenges in environmental, economic, social and governance terms.

The conference reiterated that strengthened urban areas are pivotal to the economic growth and development of the EU as a whole, with emphasis on the role and importance of an urban agenda within cohesion policy in the context of implementing Europe 2020. Commissioner Hahn outlined the Commission's future vision of prosperous, sustainable and liveable cities which actively contribute to achieving Smart and Sustainable Growth for All.
