Commissioner Johannes Hahn addressing the second annual Baltic Sea conference in Gdansk on 25 October

The 2nd Annual Forum on the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region took place together with the 13th Baltic Development Forum (BDF) Summit in the Polish City of Gdańsk from 24-26 October. The Forum brought together over 700 representatives from the private sector and civil society, from academia and the media in the Baltic Sea Region, including Russia and Norway; as well as various policy-makers to discuss how newly-set regional ambitions can play into Europe’s wider objectives for 2020 of Sustainable, Smart and Inclusive Growth.

The EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, launched in 2009, mobilises several EU policies to support the development of this "macro-region". The Strategy aims to make the region more environmentally sustainable, economically prosperous, accessible, attractive, safe and secure.

Commissioner Hahn addressed participants at the opening event, where the 2011 Baltic Sea Award was presented. He also attended the 'Networking and Project Village' of the Forum, where flagship projects of the macro-region will showcase their activities.
