nformal meeting of ministers responsible for regional policy in Liège on 22-23 November

22/11/2010

The future of EU Cohesion Policy will be top of the agenda at an informal meeting of ministers responsible for regional policy in Liège on 22-23 November.

Cohesion Policy accounts for one third of the EU budget. It helps to promote economic growth and create jobs, as well as reducing the economic and social gaps between richer and poorer regions. Hundreds of thousands of projects are due to receive support from the EU during the current 2007-2013 programming period.

At the Liège Ministerial meeting, Commissioner Johannes Hahn will present the options for the future of EU Cohesion Policy set out in the European Commission's Fifth Cohesion Report.

This Report, which was adopted on 10 November 2010, marked the launch of a broad public consultation that is scheduled to run until the end of January 2011.

Ministers will particularly focus on the contribution that Cohesion Policy can make to the Europe 2020 strategy.
