Floods in Romania: A new example of European solidarity

09/07/2010 - France, Estonia, Belgium and Austria have made their first offers for assistance to cope with Romanian floods, in response to the activation of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism by the Romanian authorities on 2nd of July. The request for assistance in form of inflatable dams, pumps, power generators, water purification systems, lighting kits and other material was immediately communicated to all Participating States through the Commission's Monitoring and Information Centre (MIC). Commissioner Georgieva announces the allocation of €24 million for humanitarian aid purposes in Sahel

02/06/2010 - The Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, Kristalina Georgieva, has announced today in a press conference the Commission's decision to allocate an additional €24 million to be used in assisting over seven million vulnerable people affected by the food crisis in Niger, Chad, Burkina Faso and northern Nigeria. The new funds will permit the financing of more operations in the nutrition and health sectors. This includes blanket supplementary feeding programmes, screening and treatment of acute malnutrition of children, free access to health services for emergency cases and mobile health services for pastoralist population (...)

The Commission allocates €3 million in humanitarian aid in response to the tropical storm Agatha in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras

01/06/2010 - The European Commission has announced today a humanitarian aid decision worth €3 million to cope with the consequences of tropical storm Agatha. Over 120 people are reported dead, and 160,000 people have been evacuated from the Pacific coast of Central America. Agatha is the first tropical storm of the Pacific hurricane season and has brought torrential rains to Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, provoking and floods and mudslides (...)
