Commissioner Georgieva is in Madrid today where she is briefing the Spanish government, members of Parliament and humanitarians on a range of humanitarian issues, including the challenge of delivering more during a period of austerity when the number of emergencies is rising.
The Commissioner is beginning the day with a breakfast seminar at the Nueva Economía Forum, where she is being introduced by Gonzalo Robles, Secretary General for International Development Cooperation.
She is meeting with Pedro Morenés, Defence Minister, to discuss the role of the military in supporting humanitarian relief, including the EUFOR mission to the Central African Republic (CAR). They are also discussing disaster preparedness and prevention and the EU Civil Protection legislation.
The Commissioner will be at the Spanish Parliament, the Congreso de los Diputados, to brief MPs on the Committee on International Cooperation for Development and Mixed Committee for the EU. The theme of the briefing is "humanitarian aid in times of crisis".
She is also meeting with José Manuel García-Margallo, Minister Foreign Affairs and Cooperation to discuss issues including Syria, CAR, the Sahel and the Philippines.
In the afternoon she is meeting members of Spanish NGOs.
