12/11/2013  -

The European Commission has deployed experts in humanitarian aid and civil protection to the Philippines to assess damage and needs. This will ensure that EU assistance is used in the most efficient way following Haiyan, the most powerful storm of the year.

European humanitarian experts have been on the ground since the start of the emergency and will be joined today by experts in civil protection. They are working on their first comprehensive needs assessment which will cover immediate humanitarian priorities and in-kind assistance, which can delivered through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The experts will also asssess the needs in the medium and long term.

The European Commission has already allocated 3 million EUR in emergency aid to help meet the priority needs of the affected people: clean water, food and shelter. The European Commission's Emergency Response Coordination Center is closely monitoring the situation 24/7.
