Better prepared for large disasters: Europe hosts massive training exercise

Better prepared for large disasters: Europe hosts massive training exercise
30/09/2013  -

Speedy and well-coordinated response can save lives in the hours and days after a disaster. Preparedness pays off – which is why the European Commission is supporting one of the largest exercises in humanitarian aid and civil protection, taking place in the next four days at the German-Danish border.

The "Triplex 2013" exercise is a simulation of a hurricane and massive floods killing 12 000 people and damaging infrastructure and communications. The participants need to work together on hypothetical rescue operations in challenging conditions - much as they would do in case of a real disaster. Also preparing for real-life situations, the EU Emergency Response Centre (ERC) is coordinating the simulation's response operations.

More than 30 organisations participate in the "Triplex 2013" exercise: EU civil protection experts, UN bodies, NGOs, government agencies and military actors. The exercise gives them the opportunity to learn and train together, improving their cooperation and preparing them to respond better when a disaster really strikes.
