Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva is participating in the conference "A new deal for Somalia" in Brussels today. There, she will remind the high-level audience of the significance of humanitarian needs in the country where millions of people suffered the effects of drought, hunger and violence in 2011.
Over 1 million people are internally displaced inside Somalia and a million others have taken refuge in neighbouring countries. Children are especially afflicted: over 200 000 children are acutely malnourished, while 40 000 children are so severely malnourished that their lives are at risk.
Humanitarian assistance is vital - some 2.3 million people are at risk of sliding back into crisis if adequate assistance is not available. The European Union has allocated more than €88 million in humanitarian aid to Somalia for 2013, of which 46.6 million comes from the European Commission.
