Commissioner Georgieva is in Jordan with the Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino where they are visiting Zaatari Camp, home to more than 150 000 Syrian refugees.
Minister Bonino and Commissioner Georgieva are urging the need to maintain an open border policy for refugees and to coordinate all assistance closely with UN agencies and NGOs. During the visit humanitarian supplies provided by the Italian government will be delivered to the refugees.
It is Commissioner Georgieva's second visit to the camp in recent months and her first since European Commission President Barroso announced an increase in EU funding to the crisis of €400 million. This includes €250 million in humanitarian aid. This package brings the total EU funding for this crisis to € 1.245 billion, out of which € 900 million goes to provide life-saving support to refugees and host communities, including food, shelter, health and water and sanitation assistance.
The Commission and the Italian government will be appealing for matching funds from other donors and will follow up this initiative through a joint assessment mission with European Union Civil Protection experts.
