If you had to flee suddenly, what items would you take with you? What makes a home? These questions are explored in On Solid Ground, a photographic exhibition which Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva is opening on World Refugee Day. The exhibition showcases the humanitarian work of the European Commission, in cooperation with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Panos Pictures, in supporting refugees around the world.
Through stunning images On Solid Ground tells the stories of those starting afresh in unfamiliar cities, rebuilding homes they were forced to abandon decades ago or embracing new means of survival in the face of crises.
The exhibition will run at St. Martin in the Fields, next to Trafalgar Square, until 31 July 2013, before travelling to Austria, Belgium, Croatia, France and Germany.
Earlier in the day the Commissioner will address politicians, academicians and NGO workers at the Palace of Westminster on the theme: "Between Humanity and Catastrophe – the future of Humanitarianism". The event is being hosted by the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD).
