Education has the power to turn the course of human development from poverty to better living standards. It is vital to the achievement of broader development goals.
To make improved learning accessible to all children, the European Commission is organising a high-level conference in Brussels today, with representatives from partner countries and organisations. They will debate the challenges, opportunities and future goals in education, which will play a prominent role in the post-2015 development framework, with particular attention being paid to building resilient education systems.
In her participation, Commissioner Georgieva has focused on bringing education to children who are most disadvantaged and unable to access quality schooling. With other panellists, she discussed measures to support education in emergencies (such as Syria, where hundreds of thousands of children, affected by the crisis, struggle to continue their schooling).
The Commissioner also presented the EU Children of Peace Initiative, through which the European Commission is investing the Nobel Peace Prize money in support for children-victims of conflict.
