Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva is in Luxembourg today where she is taking part in the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council meeting. The Commissioner is briefing EU foreign ministers on the latest humanitarian developments in the Syrian crisis and in the region. The Commissioner has called for prompt delivery of the humanitarian aid pledged at the Kuwait Donors Conference in January. She has also encouraged EU countries to mobilise additional funding for the victims of this crisis, including structural support for Lebanon and Jordan which are both being severely affected by the influx of Syrian refugees.
More than 6.5 million Syrians have been affected by the crisis and are in urgent need of humanitarian aid. Since the beginning of the conflict the European Union has provided more than EUR 461 million in humanitarian aid, which makes it one of the most generous relief aid donors to Syrians.
