22/03/2013  -

Commissioner Georgieva is in Moscow with President Barroso and fifteen of her fellow members of the College to attend an Executive-to-Executive meeting with the Russian authorities.

The Commissioner is today co-signing with Minister Puchkov a new Administrative Arrangement broadening the scope of cooperation between the European Commission and Russia to include disaster prevention and preparedness.

The signing ceremony, on behalf of the EC's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department ECHO and The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry (EMERCOM), strengthens the 2008 agreement on cooperation during emergencies.

To cope with the new challenges of an increasing number of disasters and their growing impact, the revised agreement now places more emphasis on disaster prevention and preparedness.

Cooperation will be significantly enhanced in the areas of disaster risk reduction, risk assessment methods, risk and contingency scenario planning, training, education and public awareness.
