Commissioner Georgieva is giving a keynote speech today as part of the Japanese week in Brussels in commemoration of the second anniversary of the Great East Japan earthquake.
"Building resilience: lessons from post-tsunami Japan" is organised by the Friends of Europe at the Bibliotheque Solvay.
The earthquake and tsunami which devastated north-eastern Japan on March 11, 2011, have highlighted the importance of resilience in the face of external shocks and stresses, including natural disasters. Resilience is the paramount investment to be made in disaster-prone countries, according to Commissioner Georgieva, who visited the tsunami-struck region days after the tragedy.
She also posted a haiku poem in memory of the disaster:
Deep within our hearts
We remember your sorrows
And what fell apart.
