Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva is in Austria to participate in the Second Humanitarian Congress in Vienna. Commissioner Georgieva delivered the opening speech, titled "Gender Perspective in Humanitarian Aid – Why Gender matters". Drawing upon her experience as Europe's Commissioner for crisis response, she discussed how humanitarian work can better target women – a group particularly vulnerable in conflicts, disasters and protracted crises.
Organised on International Women's Day, the Humanitarian Congress in Vienna has this year adopted "Gender matters!" as its theme.
The Humanitarian Congress is an important international forum which aims to promote the visibility of humanitarian work and to make decision-makers more aware of the relevance of humanitarian aid and cooperation.
