Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva received France's Minister of Interior Manuel Valls at the European Commission. Discussing civil protection, they expressed a common desire to strengthen European cooperation in this area in order to better protect European citizens against the growing risk of natural and man-made disasters (such as floods, forest fires, violent storms and industrial accidents).
The European Commission has made a legislative proposal to this end which is currently under discussion in the Council and the European Parliament. The proposal aims to strengthen the joint use of civil protection tools in order to ensure a timely and efficient disaster response.
Commissioner Georgieva and Minister Valls stated their common desire for an ambitious agreement on this proposal, matching the expectations of European citizens.
