Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva begins a four-day visit to the Middle East today to assess the humanitarian crisis provoked by the civil war in Syria. During her visit she will be accompanied by Antonio Guterres, the UNHCR (UN refugee agency) chief. They will also be joined by Baroness Valeri Amos, the UN Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs.
The Commissioner will travel to the Bekaa Valley, on the Lebanese-Syrian border, to see the increasing needs of refugees who have fled the fighting.
She will have meetings with the President of the Republic of Lebanon, General Michel Sleiman, and Prime Minister Najib Mikati. She will also visit a Palestinian refugee camp.
In Jordan, Commissioner Georgieva will have meetings with His Majesty King Abdullah II and his Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour.
The Commissioner will also visit a UNHCR project for Syrian refugees in urban areas.
