Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva is in Bratislava, the capital city of Slovakia, where she will watch two demonstrations by the country's civil protection services.
She will begin her visit by meeting a cross-section of Slovakian NGOs and discussing key priorities, including the Commission's resilience agenda.
The Commissioner will hold talks with Miroslav Lajčák, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and EU Affairs. They will explore ways to strengthen cooperation to increase the impact and effectiveness of EU humanitarian aid.
She will then witness an evacuation exercise during a simulated flood alert, organised by the Association of non-professional fire-fighters, in the company of Mr Robert Kaliňák, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior.
Later Mr Kaliňák and the Commissioner watch a demonstration by a special emergency unit trained to tackle industrial accidents such as chemical spillage.
