Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva (c) EU
04/10/2012  -

Commissioner Georgieva is in the Swedish capital today on a one-day visit to meet government ministers and NGOs for a round of consultations on a broad range of topics.

The Commissioner will meet the Defence Minister, Karin Enström, who was appointed in April and is responsible for civil protection.

She will also meet the Minister for Development, Gunilla Carlsson. They will discuss the Commission's new policy strategy on building resilience in developing countries, as well as exchange views on the situation in Syria and South Sudan.

Later in the day, Commissioner Georgieva will address members of the Foreign Affairs/Defence Committees of the Riksdagen – the Swedish Parliament. The Foreign Affairs Committee deals with humanitarian aid and development cooperation while the Defence Committee is responsible for civil protection matters.

NGOs, including the Swedish Red Cross, Médecins Sans Frontières-Sweden and International Aid Services, will also have an opportunity for an exchange of ideas with the Commissioner during the day.
