Commissioner Georgieva is in New York today, where she is addressing the Executive Board of UNICEF. She is the first EU Commissioner invited to address the governing body of the world's premier children's relief organisation, which points to the rising importance of humanitarian issues for UNICEF.
UNICEF is one of the most important partners for the European Commission, and further funding initiatives for tackling common challenges will be announced during the Commissioner's visit. She will also, together with UNICEF executive director Anthony Lake, launch a new web portal showcasing the work done together.
The Commissioner will address the Executive Board before taking part in a question and answer session. Later she will be given a tour of the operational centre of UNICEF's Office for Emergency Operations.
