Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva is in Madrid to discuss civil protection and humanitarian aid issues with her counterparts in the Spanish government. She will be given an overview of Spanish forest fire-fighting techniques.
Spain is one of the most active members of the Civil Protection Mechanism, which coordinates offers of voluntary assistance from European countries in moments of crisis, and has been a generous humanitarian aid donor in spite of hardship at home.
This morning she will address the Forum Nueva Economía at a breakfast briefing in the Spanish capital, where she will be introduced by Iñigo Méndez de Vigo, Secretary of State for European Affairs. The Commissioner will meet Jorge Fernández Díaz, Minister for Home Affairs, and Spanish non-governmental organisations before visiting the National School of Civil Protection and the Military Disaster Relief Unit.
Later she will hold meetings with José Manuel García-Margallo, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation; Jesús Gracia, Secretary of State for International Cooperation and Latin America; and Pedro Morenes, Minister for Defence.
