Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva is starting her three-day visit to China, where she will discuss cooperation in disaster management. Today, the Commissioner is meeting the Vice-Minister of Water Resources Liu Ning, the Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Yucheng, and representatives from the United Nations, World Bank, World Food Programme, the International Federation of the Red Cross, the National Red Cross Society of China and NGOs, as well as academics and experts.
Commissioner Georgieva said: ‘For the European Commission and for our Chinese counterparts, it is both practical and mutually beneficial to cooperate in disaster management. Preparing adequately for disasters, mitigating their impact and providing an effective response and relief to the affected people are all essential elements of sustainable development and good governance. I hope our cooperation will also extend to other parts of the world where both the European Union and China act as donors of humanitarian relief
Tomorrow, 15 June, the Commissioner will meet State Counsellor Ma Kai and will launch ‘EU-China Disaster Risk Management’, an important new project which will bring together China and the European Union to collaborate on disaster risk management.
