Both recurrent and acute, the food emergency in Africa's Sahel region requires both an immediate response to help those affected, and a long-term strategy that reduces the chronic risk of food insecurity and strengthens resilience.

The European Union has been helping the region for more than 30 years, delivering humanitarian and development aid. The Commission’s long-established humanitarian presence in the region meant that it was able to react early and substantially to the current crisis.
