Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva attended the inauguration of Bulgaria's new President, Rosen Plevneliev. At the solemn ceremony that took place in Sofia, Georgieva represented the European Commission together with her colleague, the Commissioner for regional development, Johannes Hahn.
The two Commissioners were the first guests to hold an official meeting with the President and Vice-President Margarita Popova a sign that Europe's newest Head of State intends to engage in proactive dialogue with the European Commission and work for a stronger Europe. Georgieva and Hahn conveyed the Commission's readiness to continue to work with Bulgaria towards reaching Europe's common priorities for inclusive, sustainable and green growth. 'I hope never to visit you in my capacity of Commissioner for crisis response,' Georgieva said to President Plevneliev.
She and Commissioner Hahn gave President Plevneliev a historic photograph of the signature of the document which launched EU integration - the Treaty Establishing the European Coal and Steel Community.
