The Commission's emergency response centre is coordinating European support for Turkey after the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck the country's Van province. Turkey has requested family-type tents and pre-fabricated housing to shelter those made homeless. At night, the temperature in the affected area can fall to zero, so the tents need to be suitable for cold weather.
Several countries which participate in the European Civil Protection Mechanism have already offered to contribute to the joint operation; more are likely to join.
The Commission will also dispatch civil protection experts to the disaster area. They will facilitate the delivery of European assistance and coordinate directly with local authorities and people.
