Present and future humanitarian challenges were a major topic of discussion in Helsinki, where Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva met with leading humanitarian organisations, NGOs and Finnish government officials.
The Commissioner delivered the keynote address at the "Don't Forget the Silent" seminar, organised by the European Commission (ECHO) and the Finnish Red Cross to raise the understanding of humanitarian issues and the European Union's donor work.
The Commissioner paid tribute to the Red Cross Movement - "one of the most respected sources of expertise in the humanitarian world and our valuable partner in some of the most difficult situations in the world". She also praised Finland's generous support to the world's most vulnerable people and its principled approach to humanitarian values. "Finland has been consistent in arguing that humanitarian aid must be directed wherever there is real need, independently of any other political consideration," Commissioner Georgieva underlined.
