Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva will travel to Japan tomorrow, 24 March. In Tokyo, she will discuss the ongoing relief operations with the Japanese authorities and aid providers, and will oversee the logistics of European assistance being delivered to those in need.

Before her departure, Commissioner Georgieva said: "I will go to Tokyo to personally take part in the hand-over of European aid to the Japanese authorities. At a time when Japan is coping with a very tough humanitarian crisis, I want to personally convey Europeans' message of solidarity and compassion, and reiterate that Japan can count on the full support of the European people".

Ahead of the Commissioner's visit, a European flight will depart for Japan carrying 70 tons of supplies provided by EU member states through the European Union's Civil Protection Mechanism. The aid package includes thousands of blankets, mattresses and sleeping bags.

Many of the 31 countries participating in the Civil Protection Mechanism have offered relief assistance to Japan in the aftermath of the country’s triple disaster. The offers include blankets, jerrycans, water tanks, mattresses and protective equipment – as well as financial contributions to relief operations.
