Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva visited Poland – a member state with an excellent track record of cooperation within the EU's Civil Protection Mechanism, and the leader among new members in the provision of humanitarian aid. The Commissioner had a day of productive meetings in Warsaw, where she discussed civil protection and disaster response priorities with the Polish government and civil society representatives. Poland will hold the EU Presidency in the second half of the year: the period will be marked by important developments in the area of crisis reaction – the legislative proposal on disaster response, the review of civil protection legislation, the next policy steps in prevention and preparedness. These topics are particularly relevant in the context of rising frequency and intensity of disasters, like the floods that affected Central Europe last summer.
