The European Commission made an important step today, towards reinforcing the EU's capacity to react to disasters with speed and efficiency. The new strategy, proposed by Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva, aims to secure the mobilisation and fast deployment of EU assets where needed, when needed and as quickly as needed in disaster situations. To this end, the strategy outlines several measures: identifying the main disaster risks in Europe and abroad, pinpointing the resources needed for efficient response, mapping the existing resources in EU Member States, and requesting them to voluntarily make key resources available for joint European response, when disasters strike in Europe or abroad. In addition, today's Communication proposes the pooling of crisis reaction facilities in the European Commission, to create a better platform for information-sharing and coordination of disaster reactions. The proposals fit in the overall strategy to improve disaster management in the EU – from prevention to immediate reaction and rehabilitation.
