Kristalina Georgieva saw and discussed the emergency measures taken after the substantial spill of industrial mud in Western Hungary. Today the Commissioner visited Ajka, the site of the incident, and the affected nearby villages. Together with Hungarian experts, she took stock of the work done and saw for herself the remaining practical challenges. The Commissioner was encouraged to see that the emergency phase is drawing to an end, and efforts are progressing towards de-contamination, monitoring and recovery. Georgieva commended the Hungarian emergency and rescue workers, who have managed to contain damage and prevent a much larger loss of human life as well as environmental disaster. In her meetings with experts and the Hungarian ministers of Interior and Foreign Affairs, the Commissioner reiterated the EU's readiness to help Hungary in further tackling the incident.
