Closer cooperation and better preparedness to respond to maritime pollution - those were the themes of today's visit by Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva to the European Maritime Safety Agency ( EMSA). The Lisbon-based agency provides technical and scientific assistance to the European Commission and Member States, and works in partnership with the European Commission's Monitoring and Information Centre (MIC). This cooperation has delivered tangible results in the prevention of maritime disasters and mitigation of their effects; the most recent example of EMSA and MIC's joint efforts is the coordinated help provided by the EU to the United States after the Deepwater Horizon incident. During her visit to EMSA facilities, Commissioner Georgieva went on board the "Ria do Vigo", one of the vessels that EMSA is able to mobilise when a maritime pollution incident occurs.
