European Civil Protection active in forest fire fighting in Portugal

28/07/2010 - In the afternoon of Tuesday 27th of July the Portuguese authorities requested assistance through the European Civil Protection Mechanism. Due to its present critical forest fire situation Portugal requested heavy aerial means for forest fire combat operations consisting of two water bomber planes. The request immediately triggered several offers of assistance by Italy, Greece and France. Spain had already assisted Portugal in fighting fires in the Viseu and Braga region. (...)

European Commission allocates €35 million for victims of conflict and natural disasters in Somalia

27/07/2010 - The European Commission has adopted a €35 million funding decision to support humanitarian activities in Somalia. It is estimated that approximately 3,200,000 people, about 42% of the population of Somalia, would need emergency humanitarian assistance and/or livelihood support in the first half of 2010; at the same time field assessments suggest that the situation is unlikely to improve in the second half of this year. €10 million in humanitarian aid provided for refugees and people affected by the conflict in Yemen

26/07/2010 - The European Commission announced a funding package of €10 million to respond to urgent humanitarian needs exacerbated by a lack of support from the international community. The funds will be used to provide shelter, water and sanitation, food and livelihood support, basic health care and protection. The money is directed to the most vulnerable among the 350,000 internally displaced persons, their host communities, and 170 000 foreign refugees in Yemen. (...)

This organisation, which is funded by ECHO-the Commission's Humanitarian department- provides vital assistance in Darfur where million of people depend on external aid for their survival. (...)

Floods in Romania: A new example of European solidarity

09/07/2010 - France, Estonia, Belgium and Austria have made their first offers for assistance to cope with Romanian floods, in response to the activation of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism by the Romanian authorities on 2nd of July. The request for assistance in form of inflatable dams, pumps, power generators, water purification systems, lighting kits and other material was immediately communicated to all Participating States through the Commission's Monitoring and Information Centre (MIC). Commissioner Georgieva on a visit to flood hit Romania

09/07/2010 - Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis response is in Romania to express her solidarity with the victims of the floods and to see for herself how Europe has helped and can still help the Romanian authorities cope with the on-going floods. The floods in Romania and the Republic of Moldova, as well as the recent floods in Central Europe (Poland, Hungary, Slovakia) are a dramatic reminder of Europe's vulnerability to natural disasters.
