José Manuel Barroso, President of the Commission and Kristalina Georgieva, Commissioner in charge of International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, received Salam Fayyad, Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority. The Commission confirmed its political and financial support to the building of a democratic and viable Palestinian state and praised the action of Prime Minister Fayyad. Assistance to the Palestinian population in Gaza was also discussed. The statement by the Government of Israel on 20 June and the publication of the negative list of items allowed to Gaza was considered as a welcome step in the right direction. This decision will need to be translated quickly into acts on the ground in order to change the lives of Palestinian civilians who live in dire conditions.
The Commission reiterated its position on opening additional border crossings and expanding their capacity in order to provide much needed support to medical and sanitary infrastructures and to revitalise the economy. Prime Minister Fayyad expressed gratitude for EU assistance and welcomed the visit of Commissioner Georgieva in the region in September to monitor developments on the ground with respect to humanitarian needs and access.
