In Rome today, Kristalina Georgieva, Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response announced that the European Commission has allocated €46 million to the World Food Programme (WFP) to assist urgent humanitarian needs in Sudan. She signed the agreement with the Executive Director of the WFP Mrs Josette Sheeran.
Mrs Georgieva was in Italy for a series of meetings. During the course of the day she had a meeting with the Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr Franco Frattini; Secretary of State and Head of the Italian Civil Protection Department Mr Guido Bertolaso. These meetings focussed on topical issues related to humanitarian aid and disaster management. Furthermore, Commissioner Georgieva had the opportunity to visit the Italian Civil Protection centre.
In Rome Mrs Georgieva also met with the Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) Mrs Josette Sheeran and the WFP management. She gave a keynote speech at the WFP Executive Board, where she mainly focussed on urgent humanitarian needs, such as the ones seen during her recent visit to Niger but also on the importance of cooperation, good coordination in the delivery of aid and the effectiveness of our aid.
