Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva met with the recently re-appointed United Nations High Commissioner (UNHCR) for Refugees António Guterres. During the meeting they discussed the joint work carried out by the Commission and the UNHCR for refugees and displaced persons throughout the world. They also talked about the major challenges facing humanitarian actors, such as demographic trends, the increased occurrence and intensity of natural disasters, and competition for scarce natural resources which are exacerbated by the consequences of climate change, as well as the growing threats to humanitarian space and workers posed by the situations of fragility, the changing nature of conflicts and the growing disrespect for International Humanitarian Law. They both expressed their intention to travel together for a joint field mission as the expression of the strong humanitarian partnership between the Commission and the UNHCR.
The European Commission's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO) is the UNHCR's second biggest donor.
