"The United States, Canada and the European Union don’t just share the North Atlantic as a valuable resource and a bio-diverse heritage to be protected. The Atlantic connects, nurtures, conditions, feeds and heals our planet. The vast blue expanses between countries, truly bind us together."

Galway, 24 May 2013

Taoiseach, Minister Coveney, Commissioner Damanaki, Senator Wells, Dr Jones, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

I am delighted that this landmark conference takes place in my home county, which gives its name to the Galway Statement we have just signed. This is a truly historic moment.

Though I know you've all been working very hard on a packed programme over the last two days, you cannot fail to have noticed the astonishing surroundings here on the West Coast of Ireland, and the reason it is so breath-taking – the Atlantic Ocean. I can think of no better place to take in a new horizon.
