Commissioner addresses the Annual Conference of the European Business Network

"Genuinely open innovation requires brokerage, intermediaries and networks in which all players can participate on an equal basis. The European Business & Innovation Centre Network has an important role to play."

Mr Greaney, Mr Hasquin, Mr Vanrie,
Ladies and gentlemen,

I would like to thank the European Business & Innovation Centre Network (EBN) for inviting me to speak at their annual conference. This event and its theme of Applied Innovation - the Smart entrepreneurs' perspective – come at an excellent moment. Innovation is at the very top of Europe's political and economic agenda. It is rightly seen as being one of the main drivers to improving Europe's economy.

Last October, as the Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, I launched the Innovation Union Flagship, one of the pillars of the Europe 2020 Strategy. This puts research and innovation at the heart of the Union’s policies to boost growth and jobs.
