Joint Statement by EU High Representative Catherine Ashton and Commissioner Štefan Füle on the results of Georgia’s presidential election

Brussels (28th October) - Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission, and Štefan Füle, Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, have made the following statement:

"We congratulate President-Elect Giorgi Margvelashvili on his victory in Sunday's election for the new President of Georgia.  Furthermore, we congratulate the Georgian people on this demonstration of their country's strong democratic credentials.  We welcome the preliminary report of the OSCE/ODIHR-led International Election Observation Mission.

We call on President-Elect Margvelashvili to work with the Prime Minister and government, with the Parliament including opposition parties, and with civil society, in an inclusive and multi-partisan spirit with a view to taking forward Georgia's ambitious programme of reforms and institution building.

On the eve of the Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius, which will mark a significant step forward in EU-Georgia relations, we look forward to continued close cooperation with Georgia on our ambitious mutual agenda of political association and economic integration."
