Enlargement: New Strategy and Progress Reports on Wednesday
Brussels (15 October) - Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle will present the new Enlargement Strategy and annual progress report of the countries in the accession process in Brussels on Wednesday.
After the adoption by the European Commission he will speak to the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament at 12:30 (watch live here) and will hold a press conference in the European Commission at 14:30 (watch live here).
This is what Commissioner Füle said on the eve of adoption of the so-called Enlargement Package:
"Let me talk very shortly about this year's progress report the Commission is going to adopt. It's going to be about the 4 points this year: First, it is going to be about Croatia becoming the 28th member state; it is going to be about transformative power of enlargement, we have received the Nobel Peace Prize for something. The second: It is going to be about the fact that enlargement continues despite the financial crisis but continues not because it is on autopilot but because it's a credible policy, a policy which accompanies another important policy of the EU - deepening the integration. Third element: There will be a new motto of this year's progress report: Fundamentals first. What is fundamental? Rule of law, fight against corruption but also economic issues, competitiveness, we want the candidate countries joining the EU to be ready also in the economic terms. And the last point, and this is going to be a point underlined also from the last year, European Commission remains the best friend and supporter of the candidate and aspirant countries on their very important road to become a full member of the European Union."
