EU appreciates role of Jordan in Syrian crisis and increases help

Amman (3rd June) – „The European Union fully understands the difficult situation in Jordan in the context of the crisis in Syria and we are ready to increase our help and support to cope with it,“ Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle said to the Jordanian partners during the first day of his visit to Amman. He met with the King of Jordan Abdullah II, Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Judeh and Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Ibrahim Saif. In the meetings with them Commissioner Füle acknowledged the constructive role Jordan is playing since the start of the Syrian crisis, appreciated the generosity of the Jordanian government and host communities in providing hospitality to the growing number of the refugees and expressed EU´s concerns about the general developments. “We are very concerned by the worsening of the crisis, by its impact on Jordan and by the risk of spill-over effects on the entire region,“ he stressed.

Commissioner Füle informed his Jordanian partners that in addition to the €67 million the EU already provided to Jordan to help it cope with the consequences of the refugees influx, further €50 million will be made available mainly to ensure education and health services for the refugees and host communities (see more details here – Press release). In discussions with the King and the Ministers Commissioner raised in particular the situation of Jordanian host communities and the ways how the EU could assist in addressing their needs, especially in the north of the country where they are under increased pressure to provide basic services to Syrians fleeing the bloodshed at home, but also to their own local population.

Commissioner has also visited the UNHCR registration centre in Amman and will visit the biggest refugee camp Zaatari tomorrow, where he will inaugurate a new school and sign an agreement with UNICEF to support its activities in providing education to the children of Syrian refugees.
