Meeting with OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier

Brussels (10th April) - Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, Štefan Füle, met with OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier in Brussels today. They discussed possibilities to further enhance cooperation between the two organisations, as well as recent developments in areas of mutual interest. Commissioner Füle underlined his appreciation for the excellent cooperation between the OSCE, the Commission and EEAS at all levels, including in the field. He appreciated that the EC can count on the OSCE as a reliable partner to further the shared objectives in areas such as democracy, the rule of law, media freedom, civil society, human rights and rights of persons belonging to minorities - essential areas, which are at the core of the EU Enlargement process. In this context, the active presence of the OSCE in the Western Balkans is seen also as  contribution to help these countries move forward on their respective paths towards further European integration.

He also appreciated the continued important role of the OSCE in a number of neighbouring regions of the EU, including the Eastern Partnership Region as well as in Central Asia. The presence of the OSCE in these regions helps the partner countries to advance in terms of democratic reforms and values. Commissioner Füle welcomed the continued efforts of and cooperation with the OSCE for the resolution of the protracted conflicts in the neighbourhood. The conflicts in Georgia, Moldova, as well as the Nagorno Karabakh conflict represent a threat to stability and security. Finding a long term sustainable solution to them is a top EU priority. Commissioner Füle added that the Commission continues to strongly support the valuable work of the OSCE.
