The EU and Eastern European Partners strengthen their dialogue
Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle and Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service Helga Schmid, took part in the first meeting of the informal Eastern Partnership dialogues in the Moldovan capital Chisinau today. The meeting was hosted by Iurie Leanca, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova and attended by representatives of five other Eastern Partnership countries. The format of informal dialogues was suggested by the Commission and the High Representative with the aim to further advance the implementation of the Eastern Partnership.
"We attach great importance to this new format of consultations. Heads of States and Governments agreed in Warsaw at the second Eastern Partnership Summit that we should enhance our dialogue and cooperation. This new format aims to enhance our political cooperation, streamline the implementation and monitoring of the Eastern Partnership and deepen mutual understanding thanks to their informal nature." Commissioner Füle said in his opening remarks in Chisinau.
"It is also a steering tool for effective implementation of the Eastern Partnership Roadmap and platform for sectoral cooperation. At the same time the informal Dialogue will provide an additional framework for close interaction with the EaP Civil Society Forum," he added. The inaugural meeting was held a few weeks after the High Representative and the Commission approved the Joint Communication on a Roadmap of the Eastern Partnership and several weeks before the next meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Eastern Partnership. The informal Eastern Partnership dialogues will be held twice a year in Eastern Partnership countries in rotating order. These dialogues will give partners more ownership of the process and help raise the visibility of the Eastern Partnership. It is not a substitute but an additional element to the existing bilateral and multilateral framework of the Eastern Partnership, such as Cooperation Councils, or Ministerial meetings and Eastern Partnership Summits .
