12th meeting of the EU-Armenia Cooperation Council

12th meeting of the EU-Armenia Cooperation Council

''As said by Mikolaj, the Cooperation Council was a good opportunity to discuss progress in the negotiations on the future EU-Armenia Association Agreement and our relations in general. A lot has happened since last Council with Armenia, I was pleased to see the progress across all areas mentioned. It is important to see Armenia deliver on these policies so that it can get closer to the EU", stated Commissioner Štefan Füle on 25 October 2011 at the 12th meeting of the EU-Armenia Cooperation Council in Brussels.

Our political and economic ties are strengthening as  we speak. Talks on the Association Agreement are progressing well. We are ready to engage in negotiations for a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade area with Armenia, once we have seen sufficient progress in the implementation of the European Commission key recommendations and the EU has noted the good progress made in this respect.

On mobility, very significant steps have been taken to intensify people to people contacts. A mobility partnership was signed recently in Luxembourg (27 October). This is an important contribution to enhanced mobility between the EU and Armenia. At the same time, negotiations on visa and readmission agreements will start soon, as soon as we have the green light from the Council, probably early next year. We will support  Polish Presidency on this.

Let me also mention that we are very pleased to see new and ambitious reform efforts from Armenia, bringing together most important priorities of the EU-Armenia relations: DCFTA preparation, Justice Law and Security, democratic reforms. The EU is already provided considerable support in core areas of the reform strategy. We are also ready to finalize the work on the setting-up of  an EU-Armenia Partnership for Reform. It is a very important document in form of a matrix which enables us steer our cooperation.''

The EU was represented by Mr Mikolaj Dowgielewicz, State Secretary for European Affairs of Poland, acting on behalf of the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, and Mr Štefan Füle, Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy. The Armenian delegation was led by Mr Edward Nalbandian, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia, acting as chair of the Cooperation Council meeting.''
