Statement by Commissioner Füle following his meeting with Ukrainian Minister for Foreign Affairs Kostyantyn Gryschenko
Minister Gryschenko and I had a meeting today in Strasbourg following our address to the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Club*. As Ukraine holds the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe I will maintain close contact with Minister Gryschenko on issues of common interest.
I welcomed the agreement reached by Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova regarding the demarcation of the borderline between the two countries at the Odessa-Reni highway sector at Palanca. The agreement will give a boost to bilateral relations between Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, and will thus strengthen regional stability in the immediate neighbourhood of the European Union.
We have discussed a series of legislative reforms that are currently under preparation in particular the importance of adopting the public procurement law in accordance with th highes standards.
During the meeting today I discussed our political calendar for the second half of the year leading to the EU-Ukraine Summit in December. We have a shared goal to finalise the negotiations on the Association Agreement and its Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area by the end of the year. To this end, we welcomed the advance in the negotiations and acknowledged that important work remains to be done.
We also discussed the important political reforms in Ukraine, in particular electoral and judiciary reform. I also expressed once more my deep concern at the recent developments in the cases of Mrs Tymoshenko and other members of the former government of Ukraine. I recalled the EU's concern at suggestions of political motivation behind these cases. In this context, I emphasised the need to ensure maximum levels of transparency and fairness in investigations, prosecutions and trials.
We reflected together on the recent Communication “A new Response to a Changing Neighbouirhood” and on Ukraine’s expectations from the Eastern Partnership Summit in Warsaw at the end of September.
