Statement following the meeting with Deputy Head of the “Batkivshchyna” Party Mr. Hryhoriy Nemyria

During our meeting today, Mr. Hryhoriy Nemyria and I reflected on the crucial importance of the year 2011 for EU-Ukraine relations. We discussed recent developments in relations between the European Union and Ukraine, and I was very pleased that Mr Nemyria reaffirmed the determination of the political group he represents to play a constructive role in shaping the important reforms needed for Ukraine’s political association and economic integration with the EU. In particular, we want to conclude  the negotiations of Association Agreement and Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area this year.

I updated Mr Nemyria on the progress that has been made in recent rounds of negotiations. I also explained that implementation of the Action Plan on Visa Liberalisation presented at the last EU-Ukraine Summit in November 2010  requires important legislative measures to be adopted in the Parliament in order to provide for the required standards.

I believe that, in our efforts to deepen our relations by supporting reforms that stand the test of time, continuous contacts with all political forces are critical. I assured Mr Nemyria that I have been closely following recent worrying developments in the cases of Mrs Tymoshenko and other members of the former government of Ukraine. I recalled the EU's concern at suggestions of political motivation behind these cases. In my contacts with the Ukrainian authorities, I am determined to continue to emphasise the need to ensure maximum levels of transparency and fairness in investigations, prosecutions and trials.
