60th Anniversary of Schuman Declaration-Europe Day 2010

This year's 9 May marks the 60th anniversary of the Declaration proposed by then French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman that laid the foundations for what has become European Union. "Europe will not be made all at once, or according to a single plan. It will be built through concrete achievements which first create a de facto solidarity", he said.

On the occasion of this year's Europe Day celebrations, Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy, Mr Štefan Füle stated: "When we look back at how deeply Robert Schuman's few words have transformed our continent in 60 years only, there is little doubt left that concrete and tangible cooperation, not political declarations, is the best way, if not the only way, to resolve conflicts, build up peace, protect the rights of the people, and achieve prosperity for all."
