Investing in occupational health and safety contributes to company performance, improves staff well-being, reduces absenteeism and staff turnover, and brings greater job satisfaction. There is no doubt that a good working environment is a big factor in competitiveness and can play a crucial role in increasing the workforce’s potential.
Especially in the current challenging times, we should ensure that social services continue to fulfil their crucial role in society. They are essential to allow people to live in dignity, to take part in society, in helping them to learn, to work, to produce and so realise their social and economic potential.
I am pleased that today's Council has agreed its position on the 2012 Country Specific Recommendations for the European Council at the end of June. The discussion confirmed that the role of the Employment Council in the European Semester has to be reinforced in line with the improved employment policy governance sought by the European Council.
