We need to improve the employability of the European workforce. It is vital that we take the necessary steps to foster our skills levels – especially given the impact of this economic crisis. A skilled workforce can contribute significantly to the recovery and future sustainable growth.
Personally, I firmly believe that Europe can and should be proud of the way that our social model has protected a large number of Europeans from the worst effects of the economic downturn.
We won't be setting retirement ages, nor will we be telling Member States how exactly to design their systems. We are launching a dialogue to help all countries take the right decisions so their pensions systems are fit for purpose.
Today, our dialogue and cooperation on employment and social issues is particularly important. We face common challenges on our road to recovery from the global crisis. I strongly believe that this seminar will add further value to our cooperation.
